How to Make Money Selling AI-Generated Products on Etsy? (Step-by-Step Guide)

Thousands of sellers on Etsy are making more money than a full-time job just by selling some simple digital products that anyone can create and sell. Most such products take less than a day and basically no skill to create.

And once you create a digital product, you can sell it unlimited times without worrying about things like packaging, shipping, or returns because everything happens digitally.

All you do is create your product and list it on Etsy. Then Etsy will handle everything else for you, from marketing and billing to shipping and even sending refunds if needed. This same thing makes digital products a good source of passive income that can keep making you money on complete autopilot.

Even though digital products were already super easy to create, AI tools have made it much easier. So, in this post, I’ll share with you a step-by-step guide on how you can create digital products using AI and sell them on Etsy to make money.

Can You Sell AI-Generated Products on Etsy?

Short answer? Yes. Many Etsy sellers are already making hundreds or even thousands every single day selling AI-generated products.

You can sell AI-generated products on Etsy as long as the product is actually useful, provides value, and has some human touch to it.

If your product meets these three criteria, then you can sell it on Etsy no matter if it’s AI-generated or not.

  • The product must be original.
  • You should have the right to sell it.
  • The product provides value to the buyer.

That’s it. Nothing complicated.

The main thing is, you’re not selling AI itself. You’re selling product created using it. And if your product is actually good, no one will even notice it was generated using AI.

What AI Products Sell on Etsy?

You can generate different types of digital products using AI tools. But there are certain products that sell better than others.

Here is a list of products that sell the best on Etsy and can be created using AI tools:

  • Printable planners (daily, weekly, budget, fitness)
  • Wall art (quotes, minimalist art, line art, nursery prints)
  • Journals and prompts (self-care, gratitude, mental health)
  • Wedding stuff (invites, signs, seating charts)
  • Business templates (media kits, invoices, social media planners)
  • Kids’ activity sheets
  • Coloring pages (this one surprised me)

You don’t have to invent a completely new product to sell on Etsy. You just need to find a product that is already selling well and figure out a way to replicate it using AI. And the main thing is, you need to make your product a little better than the ones that are already selling.

Step 1: Pick a Niche

This might sound boring, but it’s the most important part. Your niche is the main factor that will decide if you’ll make money selling digital products or not. So, take some time before deciding on your niche.

If you try to sell planners, wall art, wedding templates, and coloring books—all in one shop—then Etsy won’t know who to show your listings to. So, having a specific niche is important.

If you’re selling printables, sell printables only. If you want to sell wall art, sell wall art only, and so on… Don’t try to mix things up, thinking if one product doesn’t sell, the next one will.

Printables, wall art, coloring books, etc. are the main niche. In the beginning, you might have to choose a sub-niche to increase your chances of getting sales.

For example:

  • Digital planners for busy women, stay-at-home moms, virtual assistants, etc.
  • Wall art for home offices, kitchens, farmhouses, etc.
  • Kids’ printables for ages 3–6 or ages 6–9 or for grades 1–5, etc.
  • Minimalist quotes for mental health or for achieving financial goals or for working out, etc.

Once you start getting some sales, Etsy’s algorithm will know that you’re legit and your products are actually good. Then, it will start recommending your products to more and more people. After that, you can start creating products that cater to a bigger audience and in niches with more competition.

Step 2: Research Before Creating Your Product

Once you find a niche you want to work on, don’t head straight to the product creation process.

Instead, do research about the product you want to create. To do that,

Go to Etsy and type in the product you’re planning to create, like

  • “Printable planner”
  • “Wall art quote”
  • “Wedding invitation template”

After this, find out what top listings have in common. They might have similar words in their title, maybe they provide some extra stuff with their product, or maybe the images used in their listings are much more clear and colorful. Then, use these findings to create your product as well as a better listing.

Step 3: Using AI Tools to Create the Product

Now, this is where the real game starts. This is where AI tools come into play.

Let me tell you this clean and clear. AI won’t do the entire work for you. You also have to add some touch to the AI-generated output to make it useful and unique.

If you just go to ChatGPT and type “make me a budget planner,” it will generate a planner that anyone can create at any time. So, you need to make some edits to the AI-generated output in order to make it worthy to sell.

Now, let’s see how you can use AI to create different digital products.

1. Ebooks

You can use ChatGPT to research the topic, create an outline, and write the eBook. Then, take the eBook generated by ChatGPT to Google Docs or Notepad and add your own touch to it.

2. Printables / Planners

You can use ChatGPT to research planner ideas (daily, weekly, budget, fitness, etc.) and find out what pages are needed in it. Then, you can design the pages in Canva. At the end, you can tweak layouts, wording, and sections a little bit so it feels more natural and user-friendly.

3. Wall Art

You can use ChatGPT to generate quote ideas, affirmations, or typography text. Then, AI design tools like Leonardo AI, Seedream AI, or Canva’s AI image generator can create the designs for you. After that, you can adjust fonts, spacing, and colors of the designs manually in Canva to make it look unique and not AI-generated.

4. Journals

You can use ChatGPT to create journal prompts for your theme (that can be self-care, gratitude, mental health, productivity, etc.). Then, you can format the prompts in Canva. At the end, rewrite some prompts in your own words to give it a more personal feel.

5. Kids Coloring Pages

You can use ChatGPT to generate coloring page ideas and themes. Then, create simple line-art designs using AI image generators like Leonardo AI, Midjourney, or Canva AI. At the end, you can use Canva to remove unwanted lines/texts/watermarks from the AI-generated designs to make them clean and kid-friendly.

6. Worksheets

You can use ChatGPT to create questions, exercises, or activities for a specific goal (that can be learning, self-improvement, productivity, etc.). Then, design the worksheet layout in Canva. You can simplify the language and adjust instructions to make it sound more human.

7. Checklists

You can use ChatGPT to brainstorm step-by-step ideas for a checklist. Then, you can format the checklist in Canva. After that, remove unwanted or generic steps from the output generated by AI and add some small but practical details to it.

8. Templates (Resumes, Social Media, Business)

For templates, you can use ChatGPT to create template’s content and structure. Then, you can design the template in Canva. Make sure it is super easy to use and customize.

Step 4: Packaging Your Product

You can make more money by selling products in bundles than by selling them alone because people find bundles to be more valuable and worth the money. Bundles also give buyers different variations and styles to choose from.

So, don’t sell a one-page product if you feel like it can sell better as a bundle. Instead of selling a single-page planner, try selling a 15–20-page planner pack with different styles and bonus pages.

To decide if you want to sell it alone or in a bundle, check out how other sellers are selling the exact product. Then, decide how you want to sell.

People love feeling like they’re getting more than what they paid for. And it doesn’t even take much time to create multiple variations of a product. You just have to change the color, font, or positioning of the elements. That’s it.

Step 5: Setting up your Etsy shop

Setting up an Etsy store is super easy. You just have to create a seller account by filling in some basic details about you, like your name, address, payment methods, etc. Then, you can start selling your products.

I won’t go through creating an Etsy store in brief here because I’ve already created a Step-by-Step Beginner’s Guide to Creating an Etsy Store, so make sure to check it out. In that guide, I’ve discussed creating an Etsy seller account, pricing your products, creating SEO-optimized product listings, and so much more.

Step 6: The Waiting Game

You won’t start getting sales immediately after listing your product for sale. It’s a slow game that pays over time. Etsy takes some time to know your product, who it is for, and more. So, be patient.

If you want to start getting sales faster, then you need to start promoting your products outside Etsy. You can promote your products on social media, through your blog, email list, etc.

If you have some money to spend, then you can even run paid ads on Etsy itself or on platforms like Facebook or Pinterest to get sales much faster.

But if you’re just relying on Etsy to get sales, then doing these things can help you to get sales faster:

  • Adding new listings regularly
  • Improving older listings
  • Learning from the product listings that get the most views/sales.

Here’s a fact to motivate you! Every single Etsy shop with thousands of sales started from zero. So, it’s part of the process. Stick to it and wait for the results to arrive.

Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

Here are some common mistakes most new sellers make on Etsy. Make sure you don’t make these mistakes.

  • Uploading one product and waiting forever (upload more products)
  • Copy-pasting AI output without editing (add human touch to your product)
  • Ignoring listing images (products with good/clear images get more sales)
  • Giving up too early (patience is the key to success)

Final Thoughts

So, this was all about making money by selling AI-generated products on Etsy. AI-generated does not mean fully AI-generated. It must have some human touch to it.

But the best part is, AI does 90% of the work for you. So, your work will be really short and simple.

When you’re just starting out, don’t try to be a perfectionist. Your product doesn’t have to be perfect. Your product listing doesn’t have to be top-notch. Your images might suck, but that’s okay.

Good products will bring you sales, and bad products will teach you some important lessons that will help you to succeed on Etsy. So, even bad products are good.

There’s a saying, “If you have never tasted a bad apple, you’ll never appreciate a good apple.” Just like that, without creating bad products, you’ll never learn the skills to create an outstanding product.
