Pinterest Keyword Research: The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need!

Imagine walking up every morning knowing your pins have received thousands of impressions, clicks, and saves all night long. How would that feel? You may think, Is that actually possible?

Let me tell you, yes, it is absolutely possible, and it can be guaranteed! You can optimize your profile, pins, and boards for success by using rich keywords throughout them.

What is a rich keyword?
A rich keyword is a keyword or search term that has high number of searches but less competition. By using rich keywords in your pins and profile, you can easily rank on such terms.

Now, you know, by using proper keywords, you can get more engagement and conversions, but do you know how to find such keywords that can guarantee your success on Pinterest? Well, my friend, the wait is over! In this article, I will share with you every possible method available to find Pinterest keywords with a step-by-step guide. So, even if you’re a complete beginner or have years of experience with Pinterest, this tutorial will teach you everything you need to make sure your account starts to grow overnight.

There are two types of keywords: Short-tail keywords and Long-tail keywords. Short-tail keywords have only 1 or 2 words in them, whereas long-tail keywords have 3-5 or more words in them. An example of a short-tail keyword can be blogging, and a long-tail keyword can be blogging for beginners.

Why is Keyword Research Important?

Through keyword research, you can find rich keywords that you can use in your profile, pins, and boards. And those keywords help the Pinterest algorithm to figure out what your content is about and whom to show it to.

By using relevant keywords, you can easily reach your target audience and get recommended to them. Your pins start to rank higher on search. And by doing keyword research properly, you can find out what your target audience might be interested in and what type of content they want to see. This can help you to create content that has higher chances of getting clicks and conversions.

By using rich keywords in your pins, your pin’s chances of getting ranked on Google increase as well. Yes, you heard it right. Pins can rank on Google too if you optimize them properly. Here’s an example for you to watch!

Who am I to teach you about Pinterest Keyword Research? Am I capable enough?

I’m a digital marketer who has been learning about and working on Pinterest for over five years. Over these five years, I have grown several accounts in multiple niches. Throughout those accounts, I have hundreds of pins with over 100,000 impressions that have generated thousands of clicks and conversions. So, I believe I’m capable enough to teach you about this topic: Pinterest keyword research.

Here are some screenshots of my past works for you to watch.

Now, without further delay, let’s take a look at all the methods you can use to find keywords for Pinterest.

1. Pinterest Search Bar

Pinterest search bar is the most powerful keyword research tool for Pinterest. You can type anything you want to search about and get multiple keyword suggestions for it. After you enter your keyword in the search bar, it suggests multiple other queries that people search on Pinterest about that particular keyword. The queries suggested at the top are the most searched, and those displayed at the bottom have less search volume compared to the above ones. (sometimes even the keywords suggested at the bottom or lower part might have high search volume.) If you’re not getting what I’m trying to say, watch this.

Now, let’s take an example to make it more clear. Let’s say you want to find keywords related to blogging.

All these steps are the same on both mobile phones and computers. And you can check the screenshots if you don’t understand what I’m trying to say.

First, type the term blogging on the search bar, but don’t hit enter to search it. There, a keyword suggestion box will appear that will suggest you multiple other keywords related to blogging. Those suggested keywords are the terms that people are constantly searching on Pinterest. So, you can use all of the suggestions as keywords. (first method)

You can add some extra terms after your initial keyword (search term) to find more keywords. Like, you can type blogging for and different keyword suggestions will come up. Otherwise, you can use the A-Z method to find more keywords.

In the A-Z method, you have to type alphabets from a-z after your initial keyword. For example: blogging(space)a, blogging(space)b, blogging(space)c,… till z. This way, you can find hundreds of keywords that you can use. (second method)

After typing the term blogging, hit enter. Then, several colored boxes containing texts will appear at the top of your feed just below the search bar, like shown in the screenshot below.

All these boxes contain text or phrases that people are searching for along with the word blogging. If you click on any of the boxes, the term written inside the box along with your initial keyword will be searched automatically.

In the above screenshot, there is a term beginners in a colored box; let’s click on it and see what happens. It combines your keyword blogging and beginners to make another keyword blogging for beginners.

So, you can click on all the colored boxes to find out new keywords that you can use in your pins, profiles, and boards. (third method)

You can find keywords in three different ways just by using the Pinterest search bar. How cool is that? This is the method I use the most as well.

2. Pin Inspector Tool

Pin Inspector is a powerful tool developed to make Pinterest marketing easier. It is a software that works only on computers and laptops but not on mobile phones.

Using Pin Inspector, you can easily find keywords along with their search volumes. This feature makes it so unique and powerful. It uses Pinterest’s API to collect data.

Using the Pin Inspector tool, you can also:

• Generate keywords,
• Find trending topics,
• Find top-performing pins with their meta data, including pin stats, date published, number of reactions, comments, saves, and much more.
• Find popular boards,
• Top-performing pins inside a board that you can repin or save to grow your own account,
• Do competitor research using it. You can see the number of views an account gets, number of pins posted, the best-performing pins, etc., and much more.

Basically, it shows you everything that Pinterest doesn’t show you. It’s a paid tool, so here’s the link if you want to try it or learn more about it.

It comes with a price, but if you use it properly, it may be the only thing you’ll ever need to grow your Pinterest account because it has nearly everything you need to succeed on Pinterest.

3. Pinterest Trends

Pinterest Trends is the best place to find trending topics on Pinterest. You can see what topics are currently trending, what topics were previously trending, and what topics will potentially trend next on Pinterest trends.

Pinterest trends is the official product of Pinterest, so the data present in Pinterest trends is highly accurate.

To use Pinterest trends, first go to www.trends.pinterest.com and log in with your Pinterest account or sign up if you don’t have one. Then a page similar to the one given below will appear.

After logging in, type your keyword on the search bar present there and select the country from where you want to get the data for your search term.
After searching, you will get to a page like this.

This page shows the data of your search term for the past 12 months. The data is represented in graphical form. The data in this graph ranges from 0 to 100, where 100 means the keyword is highly trending and 0 means either the keyword does not have enough search volume or it is not trending.

To make it simple, if the graph of the keyword is going up in recent times or staying consistent with a high value like 70 or above, then that is a good keyword to work on. You can check the trend for each and every keyword you want to use. There is no limit to it. (first method)

Here, you need to understand that if the graph is going up, then the keyword is going to trend in the near future, and if the graph is going down, then the trend of that keyword is going down in the future.

Some keywords may be seasonal keywords, which trend highly during their season and go down as the season ends. For example: Christmas presents ideas; this keyword trends during the Christmas season and fades back after the season ends but starts trending again the next season.

If you scroll down a little from the graph, you will see some keyword suggestions, like in the screenshot below.

You can click on these keywords to check their trend, and if they are trending, then you can use them too. (second method)

If you come back to the home page of Pinterest trends and scroll down, then you can find several topics that are currently trending, and you can even sort them by interest, age, and gender of the audience. So, if there is any trending topic related to your niche, then you can create content about that topic to benefit from the trend. (third method)

Go through the entire Pinterest trends page once; you will easily understand everything in it.

4. Pinterest Ads

No, no! Don’t get confused. We’re not spending money to run ads. We are going to use the Pinterest ads feature just to find keywords. That’s it! And here’s how?

To use the Pinterest ads feature, your account must be a business account. If it is not, then you can easily convert it into a business account from your account settings for free.

To find keywords using Pinterest ads, first open Pinterest in a browser on your computer. Then, a similar page like this will show up.

Now, click on the Pinterest hub button at the top left-hand side of your screen.

Then, multiple options will show up. There, click on Create Campaign, like shown in the screenshot below.

Then, you will be taken to a page like this. On this page, you don’t have to do anything; just scroll down and press next.

After that, you will see this page. Here you need to select either Find new customers or Choose your own option. Both of these options have a similar process, so you can choose anyone you like.

After that, if you scroll down a little, you will see an option called Interests and Keywords. Open it.

After that, a page like this will appear. Here, you need to click on the Add Keywords option. By default, Add Interest option is selected.

Then, a search bar pops up where you can type your keyword and check its search volume on Pinterest. You will get tens of other keyword suggestions that contain your search term in them, like shown in the screenshot below.

You can click on the See More option to see more keywords.

Sometimes, the keyword you are searching for might not be there because of its low search volume or because it is a blacklisted word. But you will find similar keywords to it. Even in the above screenshot where I’m searching for the keyword blogging, there is no exact term called blogging because people are not just searching the term blogging, but they are searching for something like blogging for beginners, blog business, or make money with a blog.

Using this method, you can find hundreds of keywords with their search volume that you can use. Keywords with high search volume may have high competition as well, so make a habit of using keywords with both high search volume and low search volume for better results.

5. Your Analytics

Your own account’s analytics is a great way to find keywords and good topics to work on. It does not work if your account is brand new or does not have any data. But if your account has some data from previous pins, then it will work.

You can check which of your old pins performed better than others. Find those pins and check their title and description. What keywords are used in it? After finding that, you can use those keywords in your future pins to increase your chances of getting more eyeballs, as those keywords have already worked for you in the past.

This method can also be used to find good topics to create content on. By checking the data of your old pins, you can find out pins related to what topic have the most amount of impressions and engagements. After finding that, you can create or save pins on those topics.

6. Metadata of Top-Performing/Ranking Pins

You can find the top performing pins or top ranking pins (on search results) related to your topic and analyze them to find keywords.

You can check the title, description, hastags, and even the text written in the pin. All these factors helps a pin to go viral.

Find out the words that have been repeated multiple times in such pins and use them in your own. For example, if there is a pin about making money online for teenagers,

Text Written on the Pin: 9 Best Ways to Make Money Online as a Teenager
Title: 9 Legit Ways to Make Money Online as a Teenager
Description: Discover 9 different ways to make money online as a teenager from home. #makemoney #makemoneyonline #makemoneyasateenager

Here, the term Make Money Online has been repeated multiple times, so this is a keyword that you can use. You can modify this keyword a little bit to make more keywords. Like, Make Money or How to Make Money Online.

Not just keywords; you can even copy their hastags and use them in your own pins. Previously, hashtags didn’t matter much, but nowadays Pinterest is prioritizing them. So, make sure to use hastags in each and every one of your pins.

7. Pin Keywords & Hastags (while pinning)

Whenever you are about to post a pin, you need to add keywords and hastags to it. And not every term you want to add as a keyword can be found in the keywords section, but only some selected ones.

For example, if I want to add the term Pinterest marketing as a keyword in my pin and search it, then it doesn’t show up because there is no term called Pinterest marketing in the keywords library of Pinterest. Instead, they will recommend me something else similar to it, like content marketing and affiliate marketing, as in the screenshot below. And both of these terms are somehow linked to Pinterest marketing.

So, the terms that can be found in the keyword section are some highly searched and frequently used keywords on Pinterest. So Pinterest itself is suggesting you keywords that you can use in your pin title, description, and, of course, in the keywords section.

The same goes with hastags. Whenever you type # in the description of your pin and write some alphabets or words after it, it starts suggesting hastags related to the term or word you typed. And just like keywords, not every term is available in the hastags, even though you can add it yourself if you want. The hastags that are frequently used and searched are only displayed to you. So, you can add them as hastags and also use them in your title, description, keywords, etc. to boost your impressions and engagements.

At this time being, the hashtag feature only works on mobile phones. You can add hastags from your computer too, but it does not recommend related hastags on the computer like it does on mobile phones.

8. Spying on Competitors

One of the best way to find keywords and topics that are guaranteed to work is by spying on your competitors.

You can spy on your competitors pins, boards, and even  profiles. See what pins have gone viral, which boards have received high engagements, what texts and color combos are used in the viral pins, etc., and then you can replicate their success.

Try to find pins that have gone viral recently and recreate them using similar texts and colors and post them using similar titles and descriptions (don’t copy their title and description as it is but observe them and create something similar to that) and wait for the magic to happen. It won’t take long for the results to show up.

Remember, posting a single pin won’t work; create multiple pins and post them using this same technique to increase your chances of blowing up.

After you analyze your competitor’s account name, bio, pin/board titles, and descriptions, you can find multiple keywords that you can use. (Try to find competitors with at least 1 million+ monthly viewers to get the best results out of this method.).

There are certain keywords that your competitor might be using everywhere, including their name, bio, pins, and boards. Those are the keywords that you can use yourself to increase your reach.

9. Keysearch (website)

Except for Pinterest itself, there are multiple sites where you can do keyword research for Pinterest, but most of such sites don’t have accurate data and search terms.

Still, there is a site called Keysearch that I believe has the most accurate data in comparison to other such websites.

You can go to https://www.keysearch.co/tools/pinterest-keyword-tool and type the keyword you want to research about to find its data. You can find the search volume of the keyword and get hundreds of other similar keyword suggestions that you can use or research about.

As I said earlier, the search volume of keywords displayed on such sites may not be 100% accurate, but you can definitely use it to find hundreds of similar keywords that you can work with.

You can make a list of suggested keywords and research them again using the Pinterest search bar or find their actual search volume on Pinterest ads. I personally use this method to find keywords that I use in my pins and boards.

10. ChatGPT/AI chatbots

In today’s world, AI has been so powerful and important. At the time of writing this article, there is a rumor that Open AI (the parent company of ChatGPT) is about to raise funding with a valuation of over 100 billion dollars in less than 3 years of it being actually released to the public. This shows the power and importance of AI.

You can use the power of AI too, to do keyword research for Pinterest. And you don’t need to pay a single dime for that. You can use chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini to find keywords.

You can ask the chatbots to suggest some good keywords related to your topic for Pinterest, and they will suggest you some great ones.

Not just keywords, but you can even ask chatbots to create pin titles and descriptions for your pins. You don’t need any fancy prompts to do that. You can use simple prompts like ‘Generate a short but keyword-rich pin description for the topic “Your Topic”‘ and you will get fantastic results. I have tried this myself, and let me tell you, it works wonderful.

Wrapping It Up

So, these were all the methods available to find keywords for Pinterest. You don’t need to use all these methods to find suitable keywords for you. At least try all of them once and see which one works the best for you. Personally, I would suggest you use at least 2 to 3 of these methods to get the best results.

It took me nearly ten days to bring this article to life. So, if you can share it with someone who needs it or save this pin, then I would be really, really grateful.
